Fifth Cobras Selection course kicks off...with local women in attendance!

Our first women undergo a selection course to become scouts!
In March 2025, the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative team put out a call for local people, men and women, interested in becoming scouts.
On 24 March we started our fifth Cobras scouts selection process - we had 38 women and over 280 men "apply"...! Eventually, after a pre-selection exercise based on physical and cognitive competence, 84 men and 20 women were invited to the selection course. As the course progresses, people drop out, realising that being a scout is not for them, or is too difficult! After one week, we still have 41 men and 11 women undergoing the selection course.
In the next few weeks, we'll have a new batch of recruits, which we hope will include at least 4 women!
The selection course looks at physical stamina, determination, drive, enthusiasm, team work, discipline and comprehension. A basic training course with the selected participants will develop skills including communications, physical training, first aid, environmental education, team work, shooting and weapons handling ...
