Being a Cobra with the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative (CRCI) isn’t just a job — it’s a true calling.
Cobras undergo intensive training, and to graduate, they must pass demanding evaluations in physical fitness, English communication, and weapon handling. The standards are high — and so is the commitment.
To remain in the Cobra unit, each ranger is continuously assessed:
• Monthly Performance Fitness Assessments (runs, dips, pull-ups, sit-ups, and press-ups)
• Bi-annual weapon handling evaluations
Only those who consistently meet these rigorous standards can stay on the team.
This year, our Cobra team is taking it even further by joining the Wildlife Ranger Challenge 2025 — a global event that tests rangers’ physical strength, mental resilience, and wildlife knowledge.
Each team prepares with a series of challenges:
🏃🏿Timed runs
💪🏿 Strength training (push-ups, sit-ups)
🧠 Specialist quizzes (yes — even questions on marine life!)
And the ultimate test: a 21 km half-marathon carrying a 22 kg backpack, taking place on September 20th 2025
On Monday, our team — Kwanele, Aurther, Dalithemba, and Qabukani — completed their first quiz and scored an impressive 21 out of 25. They came in 13th out of over 80 anti-poaching teams worldwide… a great effort! A stressful but motivating start to this exciting journey!
