Celebrating World Rhino Day 2026!
Today, on World Rhino Day, we celebrate the incredible white rhinos of the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative, and the strength, stamina and sheer resilience of this remarkable species.
If you haven't already met them...
Thuza ("to charge/strike") and Kusasa ("tomorrow") are well and truly the rockstars of Ngamo sanctuary.
Mlevu (named after the local Ward Headman championing community-based conservation) and Asenze ("let's do it!") have been roaming Mlevu sanctuary for over 2 years.
Phakela ("get up early") and Mthakathi ("the wizard") are finally settling into sanctuary 2a.
Our rhinos have important impacts, not just on the local communities and people directly engaged in their conservation, but also on the thousands of guests that visit them.
Our newest community rhino, Mthakathi, has certainly made his mark and his story is a reminder of why rhino conservation requires patience, expertise, resources and above all, resilience, from the rhinos themselves to the people working tirelessly to protect them. This World Rhino Day, we celebrate all of our community rhinos and their contributions to the southern Hwange landscape.
